There is one thing that interests the stamp collector, the rare and/or the beautiful stamp. V.M.

I was asked several times why am I displaying work of arts on stamps issued by countries that have no relationship with the respective works. Tip: Point on the stamps with the mouse index for more information about the works of art displayed and about the stamps.

France, 1980. Jan Vermeer (1632-1675), The Lacemaker, 1669-70. Sc. 1688.
France, 1976. Ramses II on his Chariot, Abu Simbel Temple, Egypt, c. 1198-1196 B.C., Sc. 1467.
France, 1999. Antony van Dyck (1599-1641), Charles I of England Out Hunting, 1635.

This page is a good illustration by examples of my reasons, because it shows practically all

France, 1999. Philexfrance Exhibition. Venus of Milo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Mona Lisa; Eugène Delacroix, Liberty on Baricades

Taking in consideration that The Louvre is in possession of hundreds of masterpieces, the figure of eight (in about forty years) can only be considered as very small and as such cannot satisfy all collectors of arts on stamps. The very idea to issue a stamp dedicated to Mona Lisa, the most renown work of art, only in AD 2000 is a bit strange (look at this page for some administrations that were faster).

France, 2000. Sandro Botticelli, Venus and the Graces.
France, 1937. Vinged Victory of Samothrace. Sc. B 66.
France, 1983. Raphael (1483-1520), Psyche Offering Venus The Water of the Styx (1517-1518). Sc. 1865.
France, 1980. Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), Self-portrait, 1493. Sc. 1688.
France, 1977. P.P. Rubens (1577-1640), Madonna and Child with Two Donnors: Alexander Goubeau and his Wife Anne Antoni, c. 1615. Sc. 1518.

This fact was noticed by some active private companies who, with (and unfortunately sometimes without) the approval of certain postal administrations, have issued many interesting stamps that better cover the mentioned domain.

France, 1986. Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), Isabelle d'Este, 1500. Sc. 2007.

I show the nicest of them on my site, but I hope that one day I will be able to replace them, one by one, by even so beautiful stamps issued by France, Belgium, Switzerland, USA, GB, Italy, Spain, Austria, showing the masterpieces from their museums on stamps which have an adequate format and which have the quality of the French Art Series issue.

Credits: Many thanks to Francis Kolarits from the USA for information on French Art Series stamps, found in his work: The World of Masterpieces.
